Getting there
Catania Fontanarossa airport is about 55 minutes by car. Symbolic ceremonies at the Teatro Antico require an authorisation from the regional heritage office, requested months in advance; civil ceremonies are celebrated at Palazzo Corvaja. Cars cannot enter the pedestrian centre, so plan shuttle points and comfortable shoes for the couple.
Getting married in Taormina
Taormina is the most recognisable stage for a destination wedding in Sicily. The town sits on a balcony of rock 200 metres above the Ionian Sea, with Mount Etna smoking on one side and the bay of Naxos opening on the other. In practice this means that between six and eight in the evening you have a light that no studio can reproduce: warm, low, wrapping around the couple and separating them from a horizon that goes from gold to deep blue in twenty minutes.
I photograph in Taormina as a reportage: the preparation in a suite over the sea, the walk through Corso Umberto with the town watching, the ceremony, and then a portrait session that uses the terraces of Villa Comunale and the stone of the Teatro Antico. Because the streets are narrow and busy, timing matters more than anywhere else in Sicily, and I plan the couple session around the crowd rather than against it.
