The Best Time of Year for a Wedding in Sicily: A Month-by-Month Reality Check

April and May — green, cool and wildly underrated

The interior is still green, the wildflowers are out around Noto and the Iblei hills, and daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable 18–24°C range. Sunset falls between roughly 19:30 and 20:15, which means an early-evening ceremony leads straight into portrait light.

The trade-off is a real chance of rain and the occasional sirocco day that brings Saharan dust and a strange amber haze. Plan a covered plan B and the risk becomes negligible.

June — the last easy month before the heat

Long days, sunsets near 20:30, sea warm enough for a next-day swim, and venues not yet at peak strain. June is the single most requested month for destination weddings in Sicily, so venues, planners and photographers book eighteen months out.

July and August — beautiful, but plan around the sun

Inland Sicily regularly passes 35°C and coastal humidity makes it feel heavier. This is workable and I shoot it every year, but the schedule has to respect it: ceremony no earlier than 18:00, aperitivo in shade, and portraits in the last forty minutes before sunset.

August also brings Ferragosto, when Italy takes its holiday. Beaches, ferries to the Aeolian Islands and coastal roads are at their busiest, and some family-run venues close for the week. If you are flying guests in, warn them that mid-August flight prices roughly double.

September and October — the photographer's answer

If you ask me privately, this is when Sicily is at its best. The sea is still warm, the harvest is happening, the light turns amber earlier in the evening, and the towns feel like themselves again rather than a queue.

Sunset moves back to around 19:15 in early September and 18:15 by late October, so ceremonies shift an hour earlier. Late October adds a genuine chance of a dramatic sky — some of the most striking photographs I have made in Ortigia came out of a storm clearing twenty minutes before the vows.

November to March — elopements, not big weddings

Winter Sicily is quiet, cheap and often bright, with crisp days in the low teens and snow on Etna above a green coastline. It is superb for an intimate elopement and difficult for a hundred-guest outdoor reception, because everything has to work indoors.

How to choose in one sentence

Pick May, September or early October if you want comfort and the best light; pick July or August only if the date matters more than the temperature; pick winter if you are eloping and want the island to yourselves.
