Getting to Sicily: Airports, Transfers and Travel Logistics for Your Wedding

Choosing the right airport is the most consequential travel decision in a Sicilian destination wedding, and it is usually made last. Sicily is bigger than most people expect — roughly the size of Wales or Massachusetts — and the wrong airport can add three hours to every guest's journey.
The four airports, honestly compared
Catania Fontanarossa (CTA) is the island's main hub and the right answer for the entire east: Taormina, Etna, Siracusa and Ortigia, Noto, Ragusa and Modica. Widest European route network and the most car-hire desks.
Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (PMO) serves the west and north coast: Palermo, Cefalù, Scopello, Erice and Trapani's inland estates. Transfer to the city takes about 45 minutes by motorway or the airport train.
Trapani Birgi (TPS) is small and dominated by low-cost carriers, useful for the Egadi Islands, the salt pans and Marsala.
Comiso (CIY) is the quiet option for the Val di Noto — under an hour from Ragusa and Scicli, with a handful of seasonal routes.
Realistic transfer times
These are door-to-door drive times in normal traffic, not optimistic map estimates.
- Catania → Taormina: 50–60 minutes
- Catania → Siracusa / Ortigia: 60 minutes
- Catania → Noto: 75 minutes
- Catania → Ragusa Ibla: 90 minutes
- Palermo → Cefalù: 60–75 minutes
- Palermo → Erice / Trapani: 90 minutes
- Catania → Milazzo (for Aeolian ferries): 90 minutes, plus a 1–2 hour crossing
Car hire, ZTLs and the details that catch people out
Most historic centres — Taormina, Ortigia, Noto, Cefalù, Palermo — are ZTL zones (limited traffic areas) monitored by cameras. Fines arrive months later, at home. Tell guests to park outside the walls and walk.
Non-EU licence holders should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. Automatic cars are a minority in Italy and sell out first in summer; if your guests cannot drive a manual, book early.
Motorway tolls on the A18 and A20 are cash- or card-payable at the barrier and small; keep a few euro in the car.
If your wedding is on an island
For the Aeolian Islands, ferries and hydrofoils leave from Milazzo and, in season, from Messina. For the Egadi, they leave from Trapani. Crossings can be cancelled in strong wind, so build in a buffer day either side — never ask guests to arrive on the morning of the wedding, and never plan to leave for a flight the same evening.
